Offer Description

The PhD researcher will study the natural philosophical treatise De memoria and its contribution to medieval philosophy. Central in the research is the 13th-century Latin translation of Aristotle’s De memoria (part of the Parva Naturalia), made by James of Venice and William of Moerbeke. You are expected to critically edit one of these translations according to the standards of the Aristoteles Latinus series, which implies not only a study of the Latin tradition but also of its Greek sources. In addition, you are expected to study the reception of this text in medieval thought, specifically in the form of marginalia.

More information about the project or about the Aristoteles Latinus project can be requested by e-mail.

  • You have a Research Master’s or Master’s degree in Philosophy, Arts or another relevant subject, obtained with excellent study results (or will have it before the start of the employment).
  • You meet the conditions for admission to the doctoral program of the Institute of Philosophy (https://hiw.kuleuven.be/en/research/phd/doctoralprogramme#section-0).
  • Excellent knowledge of both Latin and ancient Greek is mandatory.
  • Good command of academic English.
  • You are interested not only in philology and text editing, but also in the history of medieval philosophy.
  • Knowledge of (Latin/Greek) paleography is a plus.
  • We offer a fully funded PhD fellowship for 4 years at the KU Leuven. Starting date (preferably) 1 October 2025.
  • You will conduct scientific research, leading to a doctoral degree, under the supervision of Prof. dr. Lisa Devriese.
  • You will have the opportunity to participate in international conferences, write publications, teach at the University, and organize workshops.

With your application, we expect a CV (including at least the obtained degrees and other relevant experience), a master’s transcript and a motivational statement (1 page max.) that explains why you want to acquire a PhD degree on this specific research topic.
