Offer Description

Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France’s leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France. BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.

Context and contributions of the position:

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine regional office of BRGM primarily supports government agencies, public operators, and local authorities, and carries out expert assessments and research activities across all fields of Earth sciences, including partnerships with private companies.

With regard to natural hazards, BRGM is actively involved in supporting public policies and conducting research to enhance understanding of hazard origins and evolution—particularly in the context of climate change—and to recommend appropriate risk mitigation measures.

In addition to its work on inland hazards, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine regional office has specific expertise in coastal environments, in close collaboration with the national Coastal Risks and Climate Change (R3C) team.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting studies and expert assessments to support local authorities and decentralized State services in managing natural hazards, particularly ground movements (rockfalls, landslides, ground collapses, etc.) in both inland and coastal contexts, including cliffed coastlines. Some missions and analyses may involve work in underground cavities;
  • Implementing methods and tools to characterize natural phenomena, from data collection and analysis (in-situ instrumentation, field surveys, satellite data analysis, LiDAR, etc.) to hazard and risk mapping;
  • Writing technical reports and expert assessments;
  • Consolidating, standardizing, storing, and sharing data;
  • Producing science outreach materials and articles, and identifying relevant or emerging topics for dissemination;
  • Contributing to the scientific communication of the team’s work;
  • Performing cost-benefit analyses and other economic assessments related to the recommended solutions.

  • Field experience, including knowledge of instrumentation techniques and associated data processing;
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines;
  • Autonomy, initiative, and strong writing skills for technical reports and presentations;
